Laguna Hills Citizens for a Better Animal Care Shelter
The Mission Viejo Shelter which is Pro-Humane, only 5 miles from our homes and is a toll free call for services, never
euthanizes an animal to make room for more, so we could have had the peace of mind of knowing that if our pet was lost it
would be safe at the Mission Viejo Shelter.  We would not have had the 40 plus mile daily round trip that is now required if
our pet is lost and taken to the Orange County Shelter.  We would not have had toll call bills for long waits on the phone
when we call the Orange County Shelter for services and we would have had an animal control officer in our area after
hours.  The Mission Viejo Shelter also takes in stray animals 24 hours a day.  When they are closed stray animals can be
turned in to the emergency hospital next door. Laguna Niguel joined the Mission Viejo Shelter 10 years ago with just 62
signatures from their citizens on petitions, and has been very happy with it.  Laguna Hills is now contracted with the County
Shelter and has been contracted with them for the entire 15 years that we have been a city.  City Council Members Scott
and Lautenschleger voted against any negotiations at all with Mission Viejo and stated they just did not want to spend the
extra money for the Mission Viejo Shelter.

for a Better Animal Care
Shelter
If I am lost, please help get
me to a Pro-Life Shelter.
Almost 50% of Cats
impounded at the Orange
County Animal Shelter are
still euthanized.
On 12/13/05, the Laguna Hills City Council voted not to continue
to negotiate with Mission Viejo, regarding using their Animal
Shelter, despite receiving more than 500 signatures from
Laguna Hills Residents on petitions requesting that the City
Council "make every effort to negotiate a viable contract".

"County Shelter Euthanized Woman's Pet by
Mistake" - Orange County Register,  April 12,

"New Allegations of mismanagement, conflicts
of interest, deficiencies in animal care and a
disregard for public safety" - Orange County

The Orange County Shelter has only 1 after
hours Animal Control Office for the entire
county - 2005
Of all the cities in South Orange County only 5
still contract for animal care services with the
County.  Laguna Hills is one of the 5.
Laguna Hills Stray Dog impounded 3/27/06
by the County Shelter and killed on 4/5/06 for
no documented reason.  He was a healthy
young, fawn colored male dog rescued from
traffic and examined by a Vet.  He was a
Rodesian Ridgeback mix and very sweet. The
notes on the County Documents stated that
he slept in the back of his cage and looked
a bit spooky.  Apparently that is enough reason
for the County to kill a pet.
